THE MUSEUM’S

LARGEST ENGINE

The Pratt & Whitney J58 engine was a powerful engine developed in the late 1950s, designed for high speed and high altitude.

The engine is best known for powering the Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird,” a strategic reconnaissance aircraft flown by both the U.S. Air Force and NASA. The Blackbird was able to fly at extremely high altitudes thanks to the J58 engine, and travelled at speeds over Mach 3. The SR-71 set an altitude record in 1976 of over 85,000 feet, thanks to the superb engine powering it.
