Courtesy of the National Museum of Naval Aviation Stable, rugged, fast and relatively easy to fly, the "Hellcat," Grumman's successor to their famous "Wildcat," was designed specifically to counter the nimble Japanese fighters of World War II. Although it did not enter active service until 1943, it was flown by the U.S. Navy and Marines and accounted for 75% of the Japanese aircraft shot down by the Navy during the war. This example was based at the Navy Auxiliary Air Station, Santa Rosa, California, and later became a target drone. Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
