In the spring of 1942, I went with the 97th Bomb Group (B-17s) to England. This was the first heavy U.S. bomber to arrive and we were warmly greeted. In the summer of 1942, I was transferred to the 8th Bomber Command at Wycombe Abbey, in High Wycombe.

My job was to forecast the weather over Europe for bombing raids. I was 23 years old at the time. In 1943, I went with the B-29s to China and India and we bombed Japan. Then the Marianas Islands were captured by the Marines and we moved to Tinian.

Mr. Carroll passed away February 1, 2010.
