Floyd worked as a residential building contractor and owned and operated the Swafford Lumber yard in Perry. He served as City Superintendent for the City of Perry water department and streets dept. from 1973 to 1987. He served as the Fire Chief of Kentucky Township and the City of Perry for a total of 27 years as volunteer fireman, retiring in 1992.

Mr. Swafford passed away April 25, 2013 and is buried at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Perry, KS
