In Nov 1945 transferred to B-29 Composite Wings, 504th Bomb Group, 313th Wing and transferred to Clark Field, Philippines. (1) Oct. 1948 - Apr. 1950 - 4 yrs. Civilian, student at U. of Idaho; (2) 1951 - ROTC instructor for B-26 Project for Korea; (3) Korean War -- B-26's; (4) 1953 - 56 Instructor NAV school Mather AFB, CA; (5) Inst. Of Tech. Master's in Nuclear Engineering; (6) Test engineer on Nuclear Airplane Project - Idaho; (7) Inst. Of Tech. Master's Energy Mgmt. (MBA-Syracuse); (8) Space Nuclear Project, Canoga Park (put reactor into space); (9) AF Systems Command - Inspector General; (10) Space Nuclear Office-Germantown-designed & developed nuclear generators for DOD/NASA; (11) Dir. Dev. Plans AFSC -- Command/Control & GPS & Airborne National Command Post all part of my shop at Andrews AFB. Retired Jul 1974.

Post-WWII Civilian Occupation(s):

Never having been eligible for O-6, took employment with Commonwealth Edison in Chicago as lead Nuclear Engineer on the LaSalle, IL generation plant. Brought two-unit plant on line in 1982 (2200MW electric) at $1.4 billion. First BWR-5 in country. Used USAF project experience to good advantage. Took early retirement in 1985 to care for ailing spouse, who died nine years later.

Truly dedicated group of men, pioneered concepts on which SAC was founded and kept peace for U.S.

Comments:

Bob Lyons knew me (he was on Geddy's crew). I was on Blachly's crew. We spent time in the Philippines -- miserably unproductive time after the war ended. We were part of the "Theatre Essential" force under the Theatre Commander. The discharge/rotation leave criteria did not apply to us.

We built Sawali huts, Quonset huts and worked on the line in the sand. Each first pilot had 3 crews of co-pilots, navigators and bombardiers who served as scanners on the few flights we could make.

We were there for the July 4, 1946, Manila flyover when the Philippines became an independent nation. After flying half our planes back to Hickam, we had to return to Clark Field and finally ride a Victory ship home to Oakland Army Base in Sept. 1946. Thanks to Bob for his work on the New England Air Museum.
